Dr Scott Brown, Chief Executive Officer
Dr Scott Brown has a strong track record of intellectual property management and licensing. He has held senior management roles at Cambridge Display Technology (CDT), Sumation (a joint venture between CDT and Sumitomo Chemical) and Dow Corning.
Dr Brown has worked in the US and more recently Japan where he worked closely with many of Asia’s leading electronics companies. He was a key member of the executive management team during CDT’s NASDAQ IPO in December 2004 and their eventual acquisition by Sumitomo Chemical in September 2007, when he became responsible for commercial and R & D activities. Dr Brown joined Nexeon as CEO in June 2009.
Tsuyonobu Hatazawa, Chief Technical Officer
Hatazawa-san joined Nexeon from Sony where he pioneered the development of gel electrolytes and polymer Li-ion batteries. He has 30 years materials development experience, much of it in batteries, and is very well known in the industry having worked under Dr Yoshio Nishi at Sony. He also worked on optical films and polymer materials for displays at Sekisui Chemical Company.
He has been the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the Japan Electrical Chemical Technology Award (Tanabashi Award).
Hatazawa-san divides his time between the UK and Japan offices.
Dr Bill Macklin, Chief Engineer
Dr Macklin has spent most of his career working on Li-ion batteries, and gained his PhD in Chemistry at Oxford University working with Professor John Goodenough, one of the early pioneers of Li-ion batteries.
After becoming Director of Research & Development at AEA Technology, Dr Macklin joined ABSL Power Solutions, a UK manufacturer of Li-ion cells as Technical Director. He joined Nexeon in October 2008.
Dr Macklin has published and patented extensively in the Li-ion battery field and is very well known in the Japanese battery community.
Michael Black, Chief Financial Officer
Michael Black joined Nexeon from ‘smart home services company’ AlertMe, where he was CFO, and before that he held a similar role at Cambridge Display Technology.
Michael has spent ten years at DuPont Pharmaceuticals, following a Management Studies degree from Cambridge University. He has considerable experience in the commercialisation of leading edge technology.
David Bent, Production Director
David joined Nexeon from Dow Corning where he was latterly Global Capital Engineering Regional Manager, Europe and Asia. He was responsible for several major investment projects while living and working in Europe and China.
In China, he held execution responsibility for the first phase of a £1 billion green field chemical plant.
David has a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering and is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Chris Friend, Intellectual Property Director
Chris joined Nexeon in December 2009 with a strong background combining various management roles in R&D, marketing and product development together with that of Intellectual Property. Before joining Nexeon, Chris was a specialist in the field of superconducting materials and their exploitation in energy applications, an area in which he has numerous publications. He has an excellent track record managing collaborative development programmes with European industry and academic partners. His previous role was at Oxford Instruments plc where he was responsible for overseeing the management of patent portfolios and other IPR across the Group.
Chris has PhD in Physics from the University of Durham, is a Chartered Physicist and Fellow of the Institute of Physics, and a Member of INTIPSA.
